December 2 - Cancun city officials say that although the sea turtle season has yet to finish for this year, the municipality has already recorded the largest nesting season in 26 years.

 

Cancun mayor Mara Lezama reports that as of mid-November, the General Directorate of Ecology has counted over 1.3 million sea turtle eggs. She says the exact figure is actually 1,324,069 eggs between four species of sea turtles, making it the largest nesting season in more than two decades.

 

“We achieved greater nesting than experts expected this season, which shows us that this pandemic has allowed nature to breathe,” she pointed out. She says that this year, it has been possible to protect six leatherback turtle nests, a rare species in Cancun sands. Lezama noted that last year, they only had one leatherback nest.

 

She also pointed out that last year, for the 2019 sea turtle season, the city counted 11,654 nest and that already this year, which has yet to finish, they have counted 11,660 nests.

 

“In these last two years, we have had two years with the highest nesting figures and it is our government’s priority to continue contributing to the conservation of all species,” she said adding that each day, ecology staff and tourist police monitor the nests in the city’s 12 kilometres of beaches.

 

She also says a great part of the success is due to the hotels who have installed more than 50 protection pens along Cancun beaches in coordination with the director of ecology.
