News / Cancun airport travelers told to choose transportation options more carefully
The advice aims to ensure fair pricing and protect consumers from potential overcharging
Mexico’s consumer watchdog Profeco says travelers need to opt for Cancun airport transportation by companies with posted fares. Israel Malacón Osuna, who heads the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) in Quintana Roo, made the comment in response to ongoing consumer complaints.
Malacón Osuna is urging travelers to opt for transportation companies that are accredited providers with rates visible inside the airport in order to avoid being overcharged. His comments came after numerous social media complaints about excessive charges for taxi services from the Cancun International Airport.
He says Profeco has an office inside the airport to attend to consumer complaints, however, Procuraduría Federal del Consumidor (Profeco) does not regulate taxi fares, they only deal with complaints and ensure that approved providers have visible prices.
Malacón Osuna clarified that Profeco cannot intervene when the contracted services are not offered by accredited, registered transportation providers at the airport.
Therefore, in cases of excessive charges, travelers could find themselves out of luck if they chose a transport company that is not approved for operation by the airport.
Neither ASUR (Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste), the company that manages the Cancun International Airport, or Profeco offer travelers a public list of approved Cancun airport transportation providers.
