Thousands of visitors passing through the airport found themselves part of a sea of standstill bodies waiting in a li

After another chaotic weekend at the Cancun International Airport immigration filters, federal authorities are being asked to resolve the issue. Thousands of visitors passing through the airport found themselves part of a sea of standstill bodies waiting in a line.

For this reason, the hotel union of Cancun has launched a call to federal authorities for a solution. Jesús Almaguer, president of the Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association says after last weekend where tourists themselves uploaded videos of the lines, government intervention was requested.

I have already reported it to the Undersecretary of Tourism who is the one who helps pressure immigration. We trust that there will be results by next weekend,” he said. “Since last year, in theory, the federal government has promised to send at least 100 immigration agents to the airport,” he stressed.

Almaguer Salazar said that it is simply a matter of political will since immigration agents are required to cover all the modules installed in the international arrivals area.

It is very simple. What is needed is to cover the different modules available there. It is what is needed. They are not there for nothing,” he said.

In March 2021, after a working meeting between the heads of the Secretaries of Tourism, the Interior, Communications and Transportation and the National Institute of Migration (INM), the latter promised to provide more officers inside the International Airport of Cancun.

Francisco Garduño Yáñez, commissioner of the INM, said then that the objective was to expedite the entry of foreigners into the country at the airport, which had the highest international passenger traffic rate in Mexico.

Sergio González Rubiera, president of the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies also said that they will continue denouncing the lack of immigration personnel at the Cancun International Airport.

He has described the situation as “shameful” since it has been an ongoing problem for many years.

It is unfortunate that there are not enough personnel in the INM modules, which causes problems in the arrival of international visitors due to the delay in entry,” he added.

On average, there are approximately 13 INM officers posted at the airport to carry out the migration procedures for thousands of visitors.

I have been complaining for a decade, denouncing anomalies at immigration, at the airport…at least 100 migration officers are needed, and for those who doubt it, we have photos to prove what happened last weekend. As long as they don’t assign new placements, the problem will continue,” he said.
