Hotels in the north of the state are reporting good occupancy rates despite another wave of covid-19 infections. With the state’s regression back to a yellow epidemiological light, many hotels are at their current maximum allowed occupancy rates under the light system.

According to Roberto Cintrón Gómez, president of the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, most hotels are reporting occupancy rates of between 60 and 65 percent, figures that are in line with the yellow light.

He said that reservations continue even with the fourth wave of infections. He says that the wave has generated some travel changes with tourists, though, stating that some have had to change arrival dates.

Cintrón Gómez explained that hotels are offering flexibility during this time by allowing travelers to change their reservations. He says people are not canceling.

“What we are seeing is that some travelers have decided to postpone their trip, but they are not canceling, which is very positive for the sector which maintains good numbers for reservations,” he explained.

He said that all hotels are maintaining health protocols. He says with the change in the epidemiological light to yellow, he has requested that all associated hotels respect the lowered capacity rates, mentioning that some hotels have been granted permits that allows an additional 20 percent occupancy rates during the yellow light.

Cintrón Gómez reported that even after the holiday season and during another wave of covid-19, many hotels are still filled with Cancun hotels reporting an average occupancy rate of 65 percent, while Puerto Morelos reports 61.9 percent and the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres at 66.5 percent filled.
