January 20 - Cancun beaches are reported to be back in pristine condition after suffering a month of damaging wind and rain in October. A majority of the state’s beaches were damaged due to the October storms, which included two hurricanes.

 

Cancun beaches were some of the hardest hit with infrastructure such as lifeguard towers and grass palapas being destroyed by the back-to-back Category 2 and 1 hurricanes.

 

Vagner Elbiorn Vega, director of Benito Juárez Zofemat (the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone), says that all seven of the city’s certified public beaches have been fully rehabilitated.

 

He says the city invested 8.6 million peso to rebuild 178 new sun palapas and three lifeguard towers. The money was also used to fix 42 other beach palapas and four lifeguard towers as well as the roofs of three bathrooms. Signage also had to be replaced around the city’s beaches.

 

“We had thought it would be maintenance work, but not of this magnitude. However, it had to be done. We ended up creating many new things for the recovery of our beaches,” he said.

 

In October, Cancun and Riviera Maya braced as one tropical storm and two hurricanes slammed the region in a 30-day period.
