JetBlue is cutting or postponing 27 routes, based on the carrier's schedule filing over the weekend. The full list is provided at the bottom of the article.

Some 20 (74%) started after the pandemic struck, which gives weight to what the carrier's CEO said last year when he suggested that "we've expanded a lot – and a lot of routes won't stick around." They are, in many ways, non-core and therefore less important, just like most of those cut last year.

Over four in ten (44%) of the 27 airport-pairs involve Florida, and nearly four in ten (37%) are over 2,000 miles (3,219km). Los Angeles to San Jose (Costa Rica) is the longest route suspended and JetBlue's fourth-longest, behind only JFK-Gatwick, JFK-Heathrow, and JFK-Guayaquil. Another being postponed, Fort Lauderdale-Seattle, is the fifth-longest.

Only two routes have been cut

Of the 27 routes, only two (Austin and Nashville to Cancun) aren't bookable later in the year. All the rest cease at the end of April or in May and return in October or November – if they return. It's entirely possible that some won't.

While some are more winter-focused, including Florida and Arizona, it raises the question of why others won't be served in the peak. It's likely to be partly from lower demand, very high fuel prices, and also labor.

Note: The average sector length of the 27 is 1,539 miles (2,477km), 25% longer than JetBlue's system average in March. Therefore, the higher fuel price would be disproportionately impactful.

Still, JetBlue has 2.2% more flights between May and September than in 2019, according to Cirium data. July (+3.7%), August (+4.1%), and September (+6.2%) are particularly strong. Of course, the further away it is, the higher the likelihood of cuts.
