News / American Airlines to resume Montevideo service on Sunday
The airline will operate in Montevideo three times a week
Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, will soon see a new direct service to a city in the United States. American Airlines will resume flight from Carrasco International Airport (MVD) in Montevideo to Miami International Airport (MIA) in Florida. This winter service will be the only one that operates directly from Montevideo to any destination in the United States.
Nonstop service to Miami
The service, which is typically a winter operation for the Dallas-Fort Worth-based airline, will begin on Sunday, October 29. American Airlines will utilize one of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft for this flight.
The airline currently operates 37 of these widebody aircraft across the world, and these planes are fitted with 20 business class seats, 28 premium economy seats, 48 seats in the main cabin extra class, and 138 standard main cabin seats. This totals 234 seats in this operation.
The new service connecting Miami and Montevideo is scheduled to operate the entire winter schedule, three times a week. This means that the flights will be available until March.
The initial service will take off from Miami at approximately 23:00 local time. The operation will begin three times a week, flying on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The flight will travel nine hours overnight and eventually land in Montevideo at approximately 9:00 local time. The Miami to Montevideo route will be operated as AA989.
The return flight from Montevideo to Miami takes place on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. This set of scheduled flights is set to depart Montevideo at approximately 22:00 local time. The return flight will land in Miami at approximately 5:00 local time. The Montevideo to Miami route will be operated as flight AA984.
Both of these flights are overnight flights and have similar flying times - around nine hours. American currently has 26 Montevideo flights scheduled in November, which will increase to 39 flights in December and 34 flights in January before decreasing to 25 flights in February and 26 in March.
Connecting Montevideo to the United States
This winter service will be the only nonstop operation that connects Montevideo to the United States. This will also be the only flight that American Airlines will operate out of Montevideo.
MVD, however, has a range of operators that fly internationally in the region and more. Air Europa and Iberia connect the city to Madrid in Spain, Copa Airlines flies to Panama City, Jet Smart operates to Rio de Janeiro, and avianca flies to Bogotá in Colombia, among others. Latam Airlines and Aerolineas Argentinas operate the most flights from the airport, with the former operating 250 flights in October and the latter 222.
American Airlines has continued to connect Miami International Airport with more destinations. Last week, the airline announced a third Jamaican destination, Ocho Rios, to its expanding network out of Miami. Additionally, earlier this month, American Airlines also announced the first-ever nonstop service connecting Miami to Orange County. The airline is also set to launch new routes from Miami to Portland and Sacramento that will begin later this year.
