Find your ideal winter getaway with these must-visit destinations that cater to all types of travelers

With the year winding down — or a lunar new year just getting started — winter is the perfect time to go on a vacation. The only question is, what kind of getaway do you crave? One that embraces the cold or one that escapes it? A family-focused jaunt or a solo trip to rest and recalibrate? Care for a bit of adventure? Well, keep reading because these five destinations are sure to deliver on all your winter getaway needs.

Park City, Utah: Winter enthusiasts

People snowshoeing

If you find yourself counting down the days until winter brings its first layer of powdery snow, then Park City is the place for you. With a ski season that starts slightly earlier than average, top-rated slopes like Deer Valley and Park City Mountain — the largest ski resort in the U.S. — welcome skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. If hitting the slopes isn’t your thing, however, there are plenty of other winter adventures. Fly downhill head first at a snow-tubing park, rent a fat tire bike to explore the city’s snow-covered trails, get in a workout with cross-country skiing or go dog-sledding. For a real adrenaline rush, head to Utah Olympic Park for a professional bobsledding experience on the Olympic Winter Games sliding track.

Boston: Couples retreat

Full of New England charm, cozy cobblestone streets and world-class entertainment, Boston always offers the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway, but especially during winter. Start with a Boston classic and go ice skating on Frog Pond. The activity is sure to bring you and your lovebird closer together whether you’re landing double axel jumps or barely staying on your feet. Restaurants throughout the city offer cups of gourmet hot chocolate, including some unique boozy versions, so warm up and relax before taking on Boston’s variety of indoor activities, too. There are more than 60 museums for academically inclined couples, while those who appreciate live performances can head to the Theater District for a play or Broadway musical.

Orlando: Family fun

Savvy family travelers know that winter is one of the best times to visit Orlando, when the summer crowds and heat have died down, leaving perfect conditions to explore the theme parks. As an official Walt Disney World® Hotel, Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek is a comfortable and convenient place to stay, offering complimentary shuttles to the theme park and other exclusive benefits. It’s also the ultimate family hangout complete with a championship golf course, a luxury spa, multiple pools and a lazy river that will be a hit with the kids. Of course, Orlando’s wintertime fun goes beyond rollercoasters and character meet-and-greets. Head slightly outside of the city for a unique Florida winter experience — swimming with manatees in a natural spring.

Phoenix: Outdoor explorer

Love the great outdoors but can’t stand the cold? Pack your bags for Phoenix, where the desert mornings and evenings are chilly, but average daytime temperatures hover in the high 60s to low 70s (about 15 to 21 degrees Celsius). With so many mountains in the area, outdoorsy travelers of all skill and fitness levels will find the perfect trail to explore, including wheelchair-accessible ones. You can also hop in a hot air balloon for a bird’s eye view of Phoenix and an epic sunrise over the Sonoran Desert. For a softer adventure in Mother Nature, check out the Desert Botanical Garden, a 140-acre (56.6-hectare) space with 50,000 desert plants from around the world spread across five thematic trails.

Vancouver: Independent traveler

There’s no better place to go for a relaxing solo vacation than the friendly, easy-to-navigate city of Vancouver. Book your stay at Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Vancouver-Downtown, and you’ll find yourself at the heart of all the action. Start with a short tugboat ride to Granville Island. You can spend the day leisurely strolling around this artsy neighborhood, popping into funky boutique shops and craft breweries or catching a live theater performance. Vancouver winters are mild compared to the rest of Canada so don’t be afraid to clear your mind with a long waterfront walk along Stanley Park. Then warm up with a trip to the spa, visits to world-class museums — or anything you want. It’s a solo trip, after all.

These cities make for the perfect winter retreat, whether you’re looking for a refreshing solo escape, a fun trip for the whole family, a cozy getaway for lovebirds or a bit of adventure. So, start planning, your next ideal winter vacation could be closer than you think.
