May 6 - Act fast. Select dates this year to Tokyo one-way from Miami are available for as low as $90. If you have some flexibility, roundtrip flights can be had for just over double that. Note that the fares are onboard American Airlines and book into the basic economy cabin.

 

American’s offering crazy low fares to Tokyo

As reported at View From the Wing, one-way flights from Miami to Tokyo are available for ridiculously low prices. One-way travel for various dates between September 2021 and April 2022 can be had for around $90 one-way.

 

If you need a roundtrip, American is offering some low prices at just over $200 between its Miami hub and Tokyo. Depending on when you are traveling, the fares can be found to either Tokyo Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT). Haneda is closer to Tokyo proper and would be a better choice if your final destination is Tokyo.

 

The flights mostly route through either Dallas (DFW) or Los Angeles (LAX). Dallas to Tokyo is a whopping 13-hour flight, while Los Angeles to Tokyo is around 11-12 hours in length. These transpacific flights are only a small part of American’s capacity.

 

Travel in other cabins out of Miami is pretty standard in terms of fares. If you are willing to travel to catch a flight out of Fort Lauderdale (FLL), there are some sub-$1,000 roundtrip fares to Tokyo available in premium economy for more dates than these one-way fares are available for.

 

What to know about the fares

The fares book into “Basic Economy plus Bag.” Passengers will have to abide by basic economy restrictions, though they will get one free checked bag.

 

Basic economy fares come with no changes. The change fee waiver for new bookings at American has ended. Seat selection comes at a cost that depends on the flight. If you choose not to pay for seats now, American will automatically assign you a seat at check-in.

 

In addition, if you are gunning for elite status, basic economy is not the fare for you. Basic economy fares do not earn any elite qualifying credits, whether that be EQMs, EQSs, or EQDs. Passengers need to be in at least the “Main Cabin” fare to earn elite qualifying credits.

 

American Airlines recently altered its international basic economy options. The basis economy plus bag fare is a good deal for travelers who are fine with the strict fare restrictions.

 

Will Japan be open?

The biggest question for travelers booking is if Japan will even be open for foreign citizens. Japan has not released a clear timeline for reopening for tourists. At this point, it is anyone’s best guess as to when the country will open.

 

That means that passengers booking this flight should be fully prepared that they will not be able to travel to Tokyo this fall. If you do book the flights, hold off on booking other nonrefundable travel plans without getting confirmation as to whether you can travel to Japan or not.
