Diane from Owen Sound, Ontario explains how she fell in love with St. Kitts
Diane from Owen Sound , Ontario explains how she fell in love with St. Kitts. The couple have plans to return to the island this coming winter:
"So much enjoyed our Dec 2019 trip to St Kitts! Have been thinking a lot about it since then, especially since things have changed so much in the last few months that the only travel I can do right now is by daydreaming.
I am a beach baby so while Bill golfed, I took full advantage of the Marriott hotel’s beautiful sandy beach, with crystal clean water great for bobbing about in the waves. I enjoyed many long walks along the beach in the warm sunshine.
It is true that people really do make a difference and we were very lucky to meet so many friendly, warm hearted Kittitians with such great senses of humour.
Lots of great restaurants located within our hotel grounds or within easy walking distance meant no shortage of options for dining.
A little further away, dinner at the Pavilion restaurant was truly an incredible experience. Really nice atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. Wonderful food (still thinking about those lamb chops!) and top-notch service. Landscape lighting throughout the grounds was very well done and memorable. Waiting outside for our return ride on a warm tropical night listening to hundreds of tree frogs singing in the surrounding woods is something I will never forget.
One day we took a tour around the island. Cabbies and drivers on St Kitts do double duty as tour guides and while he drove our guide also told us stories of the history and background of St Kitts and took us to see lots of interesting sites.
We stopped at Brimstone Fortress, it is very impressive and worth a visit. It has a number of informative displays you can go thru at your own pace. On our way into the grounds of the fortress we were lucky enough to see a large troop of green verdant monkeys.
We visited Romney manor and watched a brief demonstration at the batik factory. I bought a batik beach bag for a souvenir. Beautiful spot, full of history, interesting trees and lush gardens.
Another day we went on a hike through the rain forest beside Romney manor with Nickhail (from Rogers Eco tours). He was so easy to talk to and shared his knowledge about the medicinal / nutritional qualities of many of the plants we passed growing along the side of the river. He even picked some fresh almonds and cracked them open for us to taste.
Back at his van at the end of our hike he poured us a glass of cold juice and sang us a Bob Marley tune which he played on his guitar. Not a bad singer! Looking forward to enjoying another walk with him when we return in November.
For a relatively small island there is lots to see and do. For us, St. Kitts certainly ticked the boxes of what we are looking for in a place to escape to from our long, cold Canadian winters. Warm sunny days, a safe, hassle free environment, friendly people, golf, beaches and clean, beautiful surroundings. Can’t wait to get back!"
