Waterfalls are undoubtedly one of nature’s most spectacular attractions, and simply gazing at them induces a state of relaxation and tranquility. There is a great variety of waterfalls in the Riviera Nayarit tourist corridor, from impressive cascades like Jumatán to small waterfalls like El Chorrillo in Bahía de Banderas. All of them offer an unforgettable experience.

Luna Waterfall

The Cascada de Luna Ecovillage is a natural and friendly environment, where in addition to the refreshing waterfalls—which give the place its name—visitors have plenty of other activities to enjoy: hiking (with a guide), admiring the scenery, observing flora and fauna, sipping a delicious café de olla, and sampling the local fruits that are grown there. Cascada de Luna offers lodging in rustic cabins with barbecue grills and cooking utensils. Riviera Nayarit recommends bringing food and drink because the nearest store is 20 minutes from the ecovillage. Please note that there is no electricity, although there are solar panels.

How to get there: 

Cascada de Luna is located on Federal Highway 200 km 48.3 629G+M8, on the Compostela-Las Varas stretch.

El Cora Waterfall

El Cora Waterfall, located in the community of Tecuitata, is a magnificent body of water surrounded by exuberant vegetation in the middle of the tropical forest, perfect for swimming and relaxing. The hike to the waterfall, approximately 2.5 km, offers endless views of the mountain ranges and lush vegetation, accompanied by birdsong along the trails. There are also activities such as cliff jumping, kayaking, canoeing, and rappelling.

How to get there: 

The waterfall is in El Cora, less than an hour from San Blas, on state highway No. 76 Tepic-Miramar, via Jalcocotán.

Real de Acuitapilco Waterfall

Approximately 20 minutes from Laguna Santa Maria del Oro, in the state of Nayarit, is a small town called Real de Acuitapilco. Its main attraction is the waterfalls (9 in total), although you can also camp or rent a cabin. The closest waterfalls to the town are the Cascada de la Silla, which is the highest, and the Cascada de las Ánimas. However, others are farther away and harder to get to, ideal for the more adventurous; for these, you will need to take the tour with one of the town’s guides.

How to get there: 

Real de Acuitapilco is 20 minutes from Santa María del Oro, one hour from downtown Tepic, and approximately three hours from Nuevo Vallarta.

Salto de Jumatán

Salto de Jumatán is the highest waterfall in Nayarit, with a 110-meter drop down a basalt wall. This natural wonder is located in the town of Jumatán, very close to the city of Tepic. To get there, take the Tepic-Mazatlán highway, pass through the village of Trapichillo (where the toll booth is located), and after approximately 5 minutes, you will see the sign for the entrance to Jumatán.

How to get there: 

You can reach the summit from the town square by turning left towards the river and then continuing on a long hike through the vegetation. However, please note that this waterfall is located on federal property, it is not public, and to access it, you must request a permit from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

El Chorrillo

More than just a waterfall, El Chorrillo (also known as El Chorrito) is a natural spa from a stream at Cerro de Vallejo that increases its flow during the rainy season. It is ideal for a family picnic and a swim in its cold waters. Although the road is somewhat complicated, it will be worth the effort once you dip into one of the pools formed by the stream or cool off under the small waterfalls that give the place its name.

How to get there: 

To get to El Chorrillo, you have to travel at least 3 km from the town of El Colomo, in Banderas Bay.
