A Celebration of Faith, Community & Chinese Heritage

October 10–18, 2026 | Phuket, Thailand

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is one of Thailand’s most distinctive cultural and religious celebrations, bringing together Phuket’s Thai-Chinese communities for nine days and nights of faith, tradition, and spiritual devotion.

Known locally as Jia Chai, the festival is traditionally observed through vegetarian practices, prayers, merit-making, and religious ceremonies. For many participants, these practices represent spiritual purification, good health, prosperity, and a renewed connection with their faith and community.

The festival’s roots are believed to date back to around 1825 in Kathu, Phuket, and the tradition has been passed down through generations.

During the festival, Chinese shrines throughout Phuket become vibrant centers of activity. Visitors may experience prayers, incense, firecrackers, colorful processions, and sacred ceremonies involving Ma Song—spirit mediums who play an important role in the festival’s religious traditions.

For visitors from the United States, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival offers more than a unique travel experience. It is an opportunity to witness a living cultural tradition and gain a deeper understanding of Phuket’s Chinese heritage, spirituality, and close-knit community.

Come experience Phuket during one of its most meaningful and unforgettable cultural celebrations
